A Story That Began with a Simple Wish
Our journey started more than 40 years ago when Ine van Dam walked into Nico van Balveren’s bicycle shop looking for a wicker basket for her bike. Nico decided to make the basket himself, which made Ine incredibly happy. But what delighted her the most was that this basket made cycling even more comfortable and enjoyable.
Since that moment, Basil has been dedicated to making cycling even more enjoyable by offering high-quality and stylish accessories designed with your needs in mind. Our passion is to develop solutions that make cycling significantly more convenient, practical, and fun.

Basil’s History
1934 – Marinus Johannes van Balveren opens a bicycle shop in the town of Silvolde (Ulftseweg).1962 – His son, Nico van Balveren, takes over the shop.1976 – Nico creates the first wicker bicycle basket and begins importing them from Yugoslavia, establishing the Basil brand (the name comes from “van Balveren” and “Silvolde”).1980 – Basil starts importing steel baskets as well.1992 – Opening of a new warehouse in Ulft.1998 – The company’s headquarters move from Silvolde to Ulft.2001 – Marthijn van Balveren takes over the company’s leadership from his father, Nico.2005 – Basil introduces its first colorful bicycle bag – Jasmin . Many successful designs follow.2006 – Basil wins the FietsRAI innovation award for the BasSolid mounting solution, which allows baskets to be attached to different types of luggage racks.2009 – Halfords names Basil as Supplier of the Year.2010 – Basil is included in the Het Trend Book at Dutch Design Week as one of 150 outstanding companies and designers.2015 – Basil wins the Kruitbosch Supplier of the Year award.2016 – Basil celebrates its 40th anniversary !
